Mayor’s Comment Regarding Russia’s Implication of the Usage of Nuclear Weapons

Nagasaki City, the site of an atomic bombing, is outraged at President Vladimir Putin’s rhetoric made amidst the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine where he implies the usage of nuclear weapons.

Such an implication comes right after January’s joint declaration to the world made by five nuclear states, including Russia, where it was stated that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.” Such behavior violates the ardent wishes of the atomic bomb survivors, who have been calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons, to “never let anyone in the world go through the same suffering.”

We must not allow there to be a third site of a war-time atomic bombing.

We must put an end to the psychological chain reaction that leads to war, where suspicion leads to fear and fear leads to the use of military force. We strongly urge Russia to consider relieving tensions through logical discourse and to search for peaceful solutions.
